Matthew Yucha of the Ohio Objectivist Society introduced integration and reduction to the 9/12 Project of Mentor Ohio. In exploring why socialism is still on the table in the United States Matthew presented an objective way to validating political ideas by reducing them down to ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics.

On July 12, the Columbus Objectivist Meetup review what Ayn Rand has to say about family relationships. We noted that the principle of moral judgment applies equally as strongly to family members as it does to those more distantly related. Racism and tribalism evade reality by refusing to judge objectively. We analyzed the relationship between Hank and Philip Rearden in Atlas Shrugged, noting how Hank enabled Philip’s immoral behavior by not passing judgment on him. We pondered what moral breach would precipitate a complete ending of a relationship as Hank Rearden does before going on strike.

The Columbus Objectivist Meetup met on July 26 to discuss the relation between fact and value. In reviewing Leonard Peikoff’s essay “Fact and Value”, we noted that the tone of his article seemed harsh to some of us when we were new to Objectivism. We reflected that contemporary culture stigmatizes both certainty in knowledge and objectivity in judgment to the extent that we instinctively recoil at stark moral pronouncements. We discussed the differences libertarianism has with Objectivism and judged that libertarianism is wrong because it holds “liberty” as an ill-defined absolute. In addressing the “closed” nature of Objectivism, like all concepts it has a definite nature, which is Ayn Rand’s philosophy established in her writings. Anything else would be something else. We reviewed the principle of how to address organized groups without sanctioning evil - only address those that do not organize under explicitly evil principles. We mentioned but did not finally address the question: are conservatism and liberalism more tolerable than libertarianism?
