April Fool’s Day or All Fools Day is today the April 1st and it is the day to trick, prank and make fun of the gullible or easily fooled.
I have never been one for this day mostly because I don’t like feeling skeptical about people’s motives all day long. Usually I can see through and figure out what someone truly means, however it is overall exhausting. I especially do not like mean jokes, because I don’t believe there enjoyment is one sided and the recipient of the mean joke is the tool for another’s enjoyment. That being said I did hear to funny pranks and non mean jokes today.
- Crackberry.com posted a story that the BlackBerry Storm was being discontinued. I laughed out loud because they just released it and there are companies that are in the process of writing apps so I knew right away that this was a joke.
I have a friend at work and him and his wife pranked their kids today with the following cute and not harmful jokes.
- First, their 2 oldest boys share a bedroom and are deep sleepers so last night they put them in each other’s bed, so this morning they were really confused.
- Secondly, all of their kids have cereal in the morning and they have them all lined up in the cabinet, so they switched the bags inside and chaos ensued.
- Lastly and still part of the cereal, they added blue food coloring to the milk and so when they poured the milk on the cereal it was neon blue.
I was impressed with the creativity a really enjoyed the stories. I am still trying to figure out if this item is a joke. Let me know if you have heard of any good (fun not mean) jokes to play on people. I would love to hear them.
If you haven’t heard by now the White House is going to have a Vegetable Garden and a quite large one to be quite honest. I have heard the commentary on how the Obama’s want this because “it is healthier,” because “it is better for the environment,” because “it can teach people how to get free food” and “so the food can go for the community.” I want to start off by saying having a vegetable garden is a great thing and more people should garden if they enjoy gardening. Gardening for the correct reasons can promote a fuller and happier life, and this is how I got there.
Gardening is directly related to ethics, but not for the reasons most people might think. It is not good because you are helping the environment, or because it can feed the community. The ethics promoted in these examples is Altruism or selflessness. Gardening for these reasons are not bad if you (the gardener) value these things but it takes the individual out of the picture. Gardening has purpose because it supports life, your life the Gardener. Productive work is required to make a garden grow and the sense of accomplishment you feel at the end of the growing season is pride in a job well done. The most important reason to have a garden is that it builds self-esteem. When a person values his life as the standard of good and wants to do things to promote his life that productive work to promote his life (i.e. gardening).
It takes hard work to plot the land, to sow the seeds to keep the plants watered for the allotted time to see the “fruits of your labor.” Learning how to garden is a very independent selfish thing to do because you are promoting your own life by providing for it without the dependency on other people. At first you will require trade to start your garden but soon you can keep your own seeds from plants that you grew and create your own fertilizer with compost from food waste that you create. You are providing for your own life and that is the best reason to Garden.
This is the personal web journal of Rebecca Yucha. I have been studying Objectivism since 2008. However, I have been an objectivist my entire life I just didn’t know that it had a name. I use a little ‘o’ because I wasn’t consistent and raised Catholic but always questioned why we were suppose to believe things and never got a good answer. My full time job is a software engineer and some hobbies I enjoy are knitting, spinning, dyeing, gardening, and various outdoor recreational sporting activities.
On this blog I will be sharing insights on Objectivism, how I deal with every day situations and how it has changed my outlook and perspective in just about everything I do.
I look forward to your comments and I hope you find my posts enlightening and possibly even entertaining.
